Blender Notes

This is the first 3D picture I ever drew.

Ray Dream was all the rage back then.

There isn’t anything I could say that would do justice to the Blender community so here’s a link to Blender.org.

This page has turned into a work in progress. It started as “Blender Notes” but there are major style sheet issues. I’ll have to work on the story and the formatting at the same time.

It’s really a good idea to learn the various Blender controls and selection tools before you try to draw something. I’m the kind of student that wants to jump right into things and this often leads to frustrations. Do yourself a favor and spend some time at http://www.gryllus.net. Mr. Neil Hirsig has taken the time to create a whole set of video tutorials that will speed anyone’s learning curve by a factor of 100+. Blender is light years ahead of the “Ray Dream” program I first started tinkering with years ago, and the slow enlightened path is really the short cut to being creative with this. Mr. Hirsig’s tutorials are self-paced and first class in quality. They’ll save you months of pecking and hunting around.

Chapter 1 – Blender Palette IDE (Integrated Developer Environment)

Here’s some things I’ve picked up so far.

How do I get a .jpeg?

You can do a quick render without leaving the editor window.

Render Window

  1. It’s done from the render window.
  2. You need to select the default output first.
  3. I set my output button in the ????????? panel to a default of .jpeg. I like my renders to open in a new window for now because I can click out and go directly back to the editor.
  4. I rendered my scene.  When I was satisfied with it I followed; Render > Image > Save As.

Laptops, number pads and maneuvering around

I’m completely new to all this so I’m just reading the tutorials and trying to be most efficient. When I got to the tutorial about configuring a laptop number pad, I realized my Bluetooth number pad could go on the left side. That way I could use both hands when manipulating objects in the editor window. This is becoming second nature and it really saves a lot of repetitive movements.

Projects

The mannequin, the dragon and the house are the first projects I want to draw. Having said that, it would probably be a good idea to learn what all the controls in Blender do, where they are and why they are set up the way they are. I’ll have to come back to these when I know more. However, I want a photographic base as reference point for these projects. I can do that much now:

The Mannequin

This starts out with a picture and gets more complicated as I learn more.
